New Beginnings | Petticoats & Patriarchy 2.0

New Beginnings | Petticoats & Patriarchy 2.0

I’ve always been one for new beginnings. New weeks, new months, new years – all totally my jam. New Year’s Resolutions? Yes please. New, fresh notebooks that I’ve yet to massacre with my abysmal handwriting? Give them to me!

And now, a new shiny blog.

If you follow me on Twitter (which you should, I’m hilarious), you’ll know I’ve been struggling with blogging lately. I took a break in mid-Feb to focus on my degree, and then since then I’ve been sporadic with posting, lacklustre in my approach, and just generally pretty ‘meh’ when it comes to blogging.

That’s not because I’ve fallen out of love with blogging. On the contrary, I’m obsessed with it. I’ve done nothing but think about blogging – and my blog in particular – since I finished my degree. I’ve felt directionless, lost, uninspired, and above all, uninspired.

So I started to do a lot of thinking – about blogging, and what I wanted Petticoats & Patriarchy to be. And I came up with some answers

Petticoats & Patriarchy: A (Mostly) Feminist Blog

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be about feminism. Hence the name – Petticoats & Patriarchy.

Somewhere along the way, however, things got a muddled. I gave into the pressures of the ‘blogging world’ and decided I wanted to become Successful. But the only successful blogs I really saw (bar one or two phenomenal exceptions) were lifestyle and beauty blogs. So I started trying to blog about lifestyle and beauty, alongside my feminism and politics.

Which was fine, apart from the fact that I hated writing about lifestyle and beauty. It’s just not me, it’s not my style – and it showed. Those posts were mediocre and boring.

So a month or two ago I decided that I wanted to get back to my roots, and re-launch this blog as a purely feminist, social justice, and political blog.

Except, that’s not quite true. I realised I also wanted to start blogging about books. Some feminist books, some political books, but also just books in general.

And so entered a new dilemma: should I start a new blog for my book-related ramblings, or should I keep my book musings alongside my feminist and political musings?

The answer I came to was this: Petticoats & Patriarchy should be a (mostly) feminist blog. Somewhere where I talk about feminism, politics, and social justice – but also somewhere where I ramble about the 20 books I read on holiday.

A Clean Slate

I mentioned at the start of this post that I like new beginnings. I like things to be clean and fresh and organised, and so the idea of just quietly transforming Petticoats & Patriarchy into the blog I wanted to be, with all the old clutter visible in the background, was unthinkable.

So I opted for a clean slate.

Every single piece of content that I published on Petticoats & Patriarchy between August 2014 and August 2016 has been deleted, to make room for a whole host of shiny new content that I’m completely and utterly proud of.

Petticoats & Patriarchy 2.0, if you will.

There are, however, some old posts that I’m very proud of. Despite my foray into lifestyle blogging, I still put out a lot of feminist and political content – content that to this day I’m incredibly proud of. So that content will be gradually re-uploaded. Some of it will be re-worked; some of it will be in its original form. But rest assured, if there was a Petticoats & Patriarchy post you liked before, it may well find its way back here.

Where Do We Go From Here?

As well as deciding that I wanted Petticoats & Patriarchy to stay true to my real passions, I also decided that I wanted to take this blogging malarkey seriously.

In my two yeas of blogging, I’ve never really bothered with a schedule. In 2015, I posted once a week – but never on a set day. So far in 2016, I’ve been sporadic and hazy with when I post.

But those days are behind me.

Going forward, I’m going to try (try being the operative word here) to post twice a week – on a Tuesday and a Thursday. If I get particularly angry about something, additional posts might pop up in between; and if I get particularly busy, there may be a lull in posts. But generally speaking, you can expect new content every Tuesday and Thursday – starting tomorrow!

‘But what will that content be?!’ I hear you cry.

Well dear reader, it will be exactly as I said: mostly feminist, some book – and some retro Petticoats & Patriarchy posts sprinkled in.

So if angry feminist rants are your thing, stick around. I have a feeling we’re in for an exciting ride.
