In just less than a month’s time, it will have been 3 years since I started Petticoats & Patriarchy (or at least, the first iteration thereof).
A lot’s happened in that time. I’ve graduated from university. I’ve gotten engaged. I’ve bought a house (or at least, I’m in the process of buying a house). I’ve started full time work. I’ve built up a teeny tiny bit of freelancing on the side. And I’ve become the Deputy Editor for an online feminist magazine called The Nopebook.
Three of those things are largely down to this blog.
When I applied for an internship at the end of my second year of university, it was my blog that got me an interview and my blog that got me the job–the job that later turned into my first ever full time job.
When I search for freelance client, it’s my blog that proves my writing ability (and every other transferable skill that comes with running a blog.)
And it was my blog that led me to meet Georgia, the founder of The Nopebook, and my blog that proved I was up to the talk of co-running the whole site.
And now, I think it’s time for my blogging days to come to an end.
See, you may or may not have noticed, but blogging has been hard this year. Like, really hard. Like ‘you’ve been lucky to get a post a month for the last 4 months’ kind of of hard. The more I’ve thought about it, the less inclined I’ve been to sit down to write a post. And I’m a firm believer in not doing things that don’t bring you joy.
Petticoats & Patriarchy was never supposed to be an end-goal. I started it (at 3am one morning in the summer after my first year of university) because I suddenly realised that if I ever wanted to get a job as a writer, I needed to actually write. My blog was only ever supposed to be a first step.
But now I’m ready to take the next one. Over the last year I’ve taken tentative steps towards becoming a Proper Writer who gets published online. And now with The Nopebook I have a new place to not only share my writing, but also help build something that’s bigger and better than this blog could ever be.
So I think it’s time to say goodbye to Petticoats & Patriarchy. All my content will stay up so you can read and share your favourites as you please, and I may well pop back from time to time to share a little personal update. But for now, I think this is it. This is the end.
I will, of course, still be writing my little socks off – mainly at The Nopebook. So if you want to continue to read my ramblings, you should probably follow The Nopebook on Twitter, and check out everything I’ve already written here.
